AT&T’s i-Verse iPhone App to Compete with Slingplayer

So we have seen a lot of controversy now that Slingplayer’s much delayed and anticipated iPhone app has arrived in the App Store for a cool $29.99, and AT&T has restricted the use of Slingplayer to just WiFi use.

Come to find out that while AT&T is spinning the whole thing as a good way to free up badly-needed bandwidth on its 3G network, there may be other motives behind this move. So what could the second-largest wireless provider in the US have up its sleeves?

Introducing “i-Verse” — or so it’s being code-named for now — a forthcoming app that will allow users to do the same thing as Slingplayer, only with U-Verse.

According to Gizmodo:

“AT&T’s “i-Verse” app works with their U-Verse TV solution that can either load DVR’ed shows from your U-Verse recorder into your iPhone at home, or stream shows across the net over their 3G network. The app was demoed last year behind closed doors and based on the reception then, prompted AT&T to go into full-time development on it.

Interesting revelation here! This is the first I’ve heard of the new development, but this is a HUGE new addition to the controversy. So is this just AT&T trying to limit the amount of competition it will experience?

And if this is the case, what does this mean for Hulu, also expected to be gracing the app store soon? Will Hulu be limited to WiFi (if approved) also?

Your thoughts on i-Verse?
