File Your Taxes on Your iPhone With SnapTax

TurboTax has announced an upcoming iPhone app called SnapTax that could dramatically reduce the time and hassle it takes filling out your taxes. Here’s how it works:

SnapTax will let you take a picture of your W2 form and it will automatically fill out your tax return. Not only that, but you can even file your taxes electronically from your iPhone. The only real work you have to do is make sure everything was filled in correctly and make changes if necessary.

The app will work a little better on the 3GS than on the 3G because the 3GS have more sensitive camera lenses. Intuit claims that the 3GS is 80% accurate while the 3G is only 60% accurate.

There are some good and bad news. The good news is that SnapTax should be in the App Store sometime mid-January and will cost $9.99. The bad news is the limitations for the app at time of release; 1.  it only covers people who fill out only 1040EZ forms, thus ruling out homeowners and business owners, and 2. this year the app will only work in California. At least Intuit has promised that more states will be available in time for 2011’s tax return season.

All I can say is: WOW! These are the kind of apps that make the iPhone even better as time goes by. I can’t wait to get some feedback on this app.
