Do you have a stage 5 clinger that you’re just finding it difficult to cut loose? Perhaps you want to celebrate your 2 year anniversary by moving in a different direction. What if you find breaking up with your significant other on Facebook is too impersonal? There’s an app called Erase Ur X that can help you dump that special person in your life, without actually having to do all the hard work yourself!

EraseUrX will create a personalized message for your soon-to-be-ex, you can send a photo from your camera roll, or record an audio file to be sent as a message to the lucky recipient. This way that person gets the same news you would’ve delivered in person, but without you having to see them cry or risk getting slapped or punched. No more emotional drain.

And if you are truly curious, I am definitely being sarcastic. I have issues with anyone who would choose to break up with their significant other this way. But I’m not really surprised that an app like this is around. Rather, I’m surprised it took this long for somebody to come up with the idea and follow through with it.

According to the app’s Twitter, the app is coming soon to the App Store, but doesn’t specify when.

Here’s my question of curiosity: How did the beta testers try it out? Is one of the requirements of beta testing that you actually have to break up with someone using this app? I suppose you could let your recipient know it’s pretend, but still.

Check out EraseUrX’s website here.

TurboTax has announced an upcoming iPhone app called SnapTax that could dramatically reduce the time and hassle it takes filling out your taxes. Here’s how it works:

SnapTax will let you take a picture of your W2 form and it will automatically fill out your tax return. Not only that, but you can even file your taxes electronically from your iPhone. The only real work you have to do is make sure everything was filled in correctly and make changes if necessary.

The app will work a little better on the 3GS than on the 3G because the 3GS have more sensitive camera lenses. Intuit claims that the 3GS is 80% accurate while the 3G is only 60% accurate.

There are some good and bad news. The good news is that SnapTax should be in the App Store sometime mid-January and will cost $9.99. The bad news is the limitations for the app at time of release; 1. it only covers people who fill out only 1040EZ forms, thus ruling out homeowners and business owners, and 2. this year the app will only work in California. At least Intuit has promised that more states will be available in time for 2011′s tax return season.

All I can say is: WOW! These are the kind of apps that make the iPhone even better as time goes by. I can’t wait to get some feedback on this app.

A new app called iHologram has just been submitted to Apple. The app itself was inspired by a concept thought up in 2008 which theorized that it should be possible to turn the iPhone into a type of hologram. No, Trekkies, I’m not talking about stuff you can do on the Holodeck of the Enterprise; I’m talking about being able to see images in 3D, so it looks like the image is popping out of the 2D screen.

Here’s the rundown of the concept:

The application works by assuming a constant viewing angle (35-45 degrees), typical for when the device is placed on a tabletop. The 3d scene’s perspective is warped using anamorphosis, the same technique used in Hans Holbein’s painting The Ambassadors. This application does the exact same but updates dynamically.

Now here’s a video of the actual iHologram that a dev by the name of Jormy created. Then let me know if he nailed it well enough.

The bottom line to me is that it’s a great concept, and it’s cool that a dev actually implemented it in real life, but how practical is it? The app shown in the video is quite basic and isn’t anything I feel could be applied to a legit app. Perhaps it can be applied to a new game style, and then it’d be worth it. But until then, color me impressed by the tech involved but I won’t actually be buying the app myself.

BTW – it will only be available to the iPhone 3GS.

This has happened to me, and I’m willing to bet it’s happened to you: you’re in the airport and you’re trying to find the closest way-too-expensive gift shop to buy a magazine, or maybe you’re just looking for the bathroom. Perhaps you’re wondering where the heck your gate is and the signs are just too confusing. Soon, there will be an app for that!

Micello, Inc. announced an app at this week’s Demo09 conference that will give you a Google Maps-type experience for indoor settings.

On Micello’s website, they explain:

Millions of people today use Google Maps to get to their destination. Micello goes one step further by extending a map inside locations, such as convention centers, shopping malls, college campuses, airports, and theme parks. Micello brings any location alive on a mobile phone by providing a navigatable map and a rich set of interactive services in the context of time and place. Micello creates communities for these places, providing you highly relevant information on your mobile device.

Frankly I think this is a no-duh application. Why hasn’t this come out sooner? In fact, a time or two I’ve wondered to myself if there was an app out there for something like this, and now I’m wishing I’d done more research and made the app myself.

Check out the video below:

There will be a heck of a lot of practical use for an app like this, but my only concern is that at launch “We will have over 100 maps of the bay area when we release the application in few weeks,” according to Micello’s press release. “We add about 10 maps a day and are scaling to accelerate that. We will add a region at a time.” So it will be a while before Micello is truly comprehensive.

“The maps today bring you to the door. We take you inside the place. It’s the last mile, the unchartered territory. We are building the foundation for indoor location based services and creating an eco-system similar to what’s happening in the outdoor space,” said Ankit Agarwal, Founder and CEO of Micello. “Micello is really all about people, places and events at indoor locations. What’s happening here and who is here now,” he added.

At launch, Micello will be free. But there was no word on when it will be ready.

In attempt to add extra intrigue to its new electric car set to be unveiled this Sunday, Nissan is developing an iPhone app that will allow drivers to closely monitor the status of these new cars.

These electric cars, planning on a 2010 debut in Japan and North America, will hold lithium ion batteries and contain its own IT system that will enable the iPhone app to take a peek and control different functions of the car remotely.

Drivers of the new car will be able to:

Check the battery status of the car and how long it will take to fully charge it

Find out the car’s internal temperature

Remotely turn on the car’s AC, to make it cool enough before you get inside

There may be more features added later, but this is an incredible start to what will become a very useful and innovative iPhone application.

Working versions have been demonstrated by Nissan at its headquarters in Japan, so we know the app should be in excellent working condition by the time the new car is officially on the market.

What is an augmented reality app? Instead of using 2G (or even 3G) maps, augmented reality is another way to find your way around town because it takes advantage of the video recording and compass that comes with your iPhone 3GS.

Nearest Tube is one such example. Submitted to Apple, this particular app helps you get around the subway system of London (with more cities to come soon). No matter where you’re at in the city, you can point your iphone in any direction and find the nearest subway station, the distance and direction to that station. For a better way of explaining, take a look at this video.

Nearest Tube is developed by acrossair. If you’d like to beta test this app for other cities and have a iPhone 3GS, sign up at their website. You’ll need to live in San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, or Tokyo in order to take advantage of the beta testing.

Check out acrossair’s website here for more information about this unique new style of iPhone app.

At YourNextApp we’re always looking for some truly innovative and unique app ideas, and proudly shout from the rooftops about them. Power On, created by Kevin Muma, is one such app.

The concept behind Power On is so simple I wonder why I didn’t think of it myself. It allows you to remotely turn on or wake up any of the computers in your network.

How could this be of any benefit? With Power On you can wake your sleeping Mac and then play iTunes music using Apple’s Remote App, all without leaving your couch.

Here’s a screenshot:

Setup will be quite easy. To learn more about the process, visit PowerOn’s website.

I suspect that the computers can only be woken up if your iPhone is in the network as well, meaning you’d have to be within the same WiFi zone and it would not work on 3G. I will keep you updated if I find out differently, however.

My other suggestion for future updates is to add an option to Power Off (or put to sleep) these same devices once you’re done using them.

Power On is still a great idea and I hope it can be implemented flawlessly. <del datetime="2009-08-19T03:57:00+00:00">It was submitted to the App Store on July 16, so we should be seeing it in less than 8 days.</del>

The app is actually now available in iTunes for download, and you can get it here.
